Crete placed on “Red Code” mobilisation as storms cause floods and bridge collapse
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection declared Crete on “Red Code” mobilisation after heavy rain caused floods, road damage and a bridge collapse near Rethymno.

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection placed the Greek island of Crete in a state of mobilisation — “Red Code” — from last night until Sunday because of forecasts for severe weather and a high risk of flooding.
Widespread response as heavy rain hits Heraklion and Lasithi
The Hellenic Fire Service reported that heavy downpours affected the regional units of Heraklion and Lasithi. Large numbers of firefighters were deployed across the island to provide assistance, pump out water, clear fallen trees and evacuate residents to safe locations.
In several areas the rain has pushed water levels up and caused damage to the local road network, disrupting traffic and access to some communities.
Early this morning the heavy rain caused a landslide near the city of Rethymno. Local reports say a small bridge gave way while a car with two people — an elderly married couple — was crossing. The vehicle fell into a hole created by the collapse.
Emergency crews pulled the couple from the vehicle and they were rescued without serious injuries. Both were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
Authorities on Crete continue to monitor weather forecasts and keep resources on standby while crews work to restore routes and assist affected residents.
