Benfica visited San Siro and delivered a 2:0 victory over AC Milan on the opening night of the Europa League group stage on 16 September 2026. The Portuguese side struck early through Lukebakio in the 16th minute and sealed the win with Kaminski's goal in the 53rd minute.

Amorim loses against his former club; several draws and expected wins elsewhere

The result was a painful one for Milan’s new coach Ruben Amorim, who suffered defeat against the club where he spent part of his playing career. Benfica’s performance at the iconic stadium underlined their credentials in the competition.

Elsewhere across the competition, Ararat were beaten at home by Sparta Prague, 1:4, while Omonia edged Celta Vigo 1:0. Lyon claimed a 2:1 away win over Anderlecht, and Bayer Leverkusen, as heavy favourites, defeated Celje 2:0.

Hapoel Beer Sheva and Dinamo Zagreb played out a goalless draw, 0:0. Olympiakos beat Jagiellonia 2:1, Sturm Graz and Rennes drew 0:0, and Sunderland won 1:0 against AZ Alkmaar.

Earlier in the day PSG recorded a win against Zagreb, and Füchse Berlin suffered a home defeat, adding more twists to the opening matchday.
