Lionel Messi announces retirement from Argentina national team

Lionel Messi announced on 31 August 2026 that he is ending his international career and will no longer play for the Argentina national team. The captain made the decision public in an emotional message on social media after more than 20 years with the Albiceleste and following Argentina’s run to the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the team finished second.

Messi leaves international football with more than 200 appearances, one World Cup title and two Copa América trophies to his name.

In his message Messi wrote: "After a long time of reflection I have decided to retire from the national team. The decision pains my soul, but I feel the right moment has come. I have always given everything for this shirt and I will always love Argentina. I am empty, I have nothing more to give, and great young players are coming behind me who deserve to be here."

What the announcement means for Argentina

The 35-year-old forward thanked family, teammates, coaches and the supporters for their backing across his international career and stressed that he will remain a fan. "Now I will be one of you; I will cheer and support Argentina from the outside," Messi added.

His decision opens a new chapter for the national team as it prepares to transition toward a younger generation. While Messi’s presence on the pitch will be missed, the squad’s coaching staff and federation face the task of integrating rising talents who, Messi suggested, "deserve to be here."

For football fans worldwide, Messi’s retirement from international duty marks the end of an era in which he was synonymous with Argentina’s most important moments on the global stage.
