Local storms in North Macedonia: heavy rain, thunder and winds up to 40 km/h
The Hydrometeorological Service warns of downpours above 15 l/m² and stronger northwest winds; daytime temperatures will fall.
Published: 12 September 2026, 08:54. Variable cloudiness will dominate today across North Macedonia, with intermittent rain and locally more intense storms.
In some areas showers may develop into thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours — locally exceeding 15 liters per square metre — and lightning. Winds will be moderate overall, with parts of the Povardarie plain expecting stronger northwesterly gusts reaching up to 40 km/h.
Temperatures will range broadly: overnight minima are forecast between 12 and 19 °C, while daytime highs are expected from 27 to 33 °C. In Skopje the minimum should drop to about 19 °C and the maximum rise to near 26 °C.
Short-term outlook
Daytime temperatures will trend downward after today. A period of sunnier weather with light to moderate cloud cover is expected to follow, although localized rain is possible again on Tuesday and Thursday, according to the Hydrometeorological Service (UHMR).
Residents in vulnerable areas — especially low-lying parts of river valleys and basins — should be prepared for sudden heavy showers and gusty winds that may briefly reduce visibility and affect travel.
