Luka Modrić met with Real president Florentino Perez to discuss his future

Captain Luka Modrić visited Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training centre on Wednesday and spoke with club president Florentino Perez about his long-term plans, sources say. Modrić told those around him that his intention is to return to Real Madrid on a permanent basis once his current spell elsewhere concludes.

Future role unclear, talks ongoing

Details of the meeting have not been made public, but the conversation with Perez was described as a step toward determining what role would suit Modrić going forward. It remains unclear whether that role would be on the sporting side, in a mentoring capacity, or in another position within the club.

Meanwhile, his current employers, Milan, are prepared to give the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner full freedom to decide his next move, as they have done so far. The Rossoneri say they will accept whatever decision Modrić ultimately makes.

At the same time Milan have already begun evaluating potential long-term replacements. The club are not seeking a carbon copy of Modrić but a midfielder whose attributes better match Ruben Amorim’s style: strength, pace, intensity and good dribbling.

One player on Milan’s radar is Alex Scott, a 2003-born midfielder who currently plays for Bournemouth and the England youth setup. Club officials have followed him for weeks and his valuation is reported above €50 million. Discussions could take place on 22 October when Amorim’s side travel to Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium in a Europa League fixture, but Scott is sidelined with a quadriceps injury sustained on international duty and is expected to be out for around two months.

Club leaders—including Cardinale, who has pledged that Milan will sign only top-level reinforcements—see Scott as an investment that aligns with RedBird’s strategy, combining athleticism and technical quality. Sources add that in Amorim’s system Scott would offer more athleticism and dynamism than Musa and could pair well in midfield alongside a player like Rabiot.

For now, Modrić remains a useful option for Amorim and Milan, who expect to see him again soon at Valdebebas as talks continue.
