Maia Sandu says unification with Romania would increase Moldova's security
Sandu told participants at the Moldovan Security Forum that unification could raise Moldova's security but must rest on majority consent.

Maia Sandu said she supports the idea of unification between Moldova and Romania, arguing that such a step would improve Moldovan security. She made the remarks on the sidelines of the Moldovan Security Forum in Chișinău on October 8, 2026.
“I believe that Moldova would have greater security together with Romania. This discussion has been taking place since the first day of independence,” Sandu said, framing the question as one that cannot be decided without the clear will of the majority.
Sandu added that, according to recent polls, most Moldovans do not favour immediate unification with Romania but do support deeper integration with the European Union. She stressed that any change of this magnitude would require a referendum and the explicit consent of the population.
Economic and energy ties cited as factors
In her comments the president pointed to long-standing practical links between the two countries: Romania is Moldova’s largest export market and an important economic partner, while the two capitals cooperate on energy and other projects that affect daily life in Chișinău.
Sandu has previously signalled openness to the idea: at the beginning of the year she said she would vote in favour of unification if a referendum on the matter were held. Romanian media reported her recent remarks on October 9, 2026.
