Michael Carrick accepts responsibility after 4-1 loss to Como

24.10.2026 — Michael Carrick faced one of the toughest stretches of his tenure as Manchester United manager on Saturday, after a run of seven games without a win and a heavy 4:1 defeat to Como in the Champions League. Ahead of United’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth, Carrick publicly accepted responsibility for the team’s poor form.

Carrick spoke for more than five minutes without taking questions

At the press conference the manager delivered a monologue lasting longer than five minutes while no questions were asked. He admitted the squad is not performing at the required level and singled out the midweek loss in Italy as particularly damaging — a night that left United 20th in the Champions League standings.

"We are not going through a good period and I am fully aware of that. Behind us are five months with successes and many things I was pleased with. But recently we have not been good enough," Carrick said, reflecting on recent results and form.

Commenting on the Como defeat he added: "Wednesday was a bad night for many reasons, and it was painful to watch our performance. That was unacceptable." Carrick, who last season led the team into the top three and secured a return to the Champions League, said the players must win back the supporters’ trust.

He stressed that Manchester United cannot rely on past glory and urged a return to humility and hard work across the club. "It is my responsibility on the pitch to produce a team that supporters can be proud of. Recently we have drifted away from that and I am taking steps to change it. We must bring back the connection, energy, intensity, passion and enjoyment," he said.

In closing Carrick framed his role in a vivid image: "It is my responsibility to lead the team. Everything that happens on the pitch, how we look and how we feel — it is all my responsibility," he said. "I will hold the umbrella and get wet, so everyone else can stay dry. That is my role, but also a privilege."

Manchester United sit 13th in the Premier League with seven points; Bournemouth arrive at Old Trafford on Sunday with one point fewer.
