North Macedonia marks 85 years since the 1941 uprising

The Republic of North Macedonia on October 11, 2026 marked the 85th anniversary of the 1941 popular uprising that began in Prilep and Kumanovo and launched the struggle against fascism.

A commemorative academy will be held at 12:00 p.m. at the Memorial Ossuary in Kumanovo under the slogan "Ideals that build the future," and the Prime Minister, Hristijan Mickoski, is scheduled to deliver remarks.

Ceremonies in Kumanovo and Skopje

The day's events also include the presentation of the eponymous award in the Parliament building in Skopje. Government officials and representatives of veterans' and civic organizations are expected to attend both ceremonies.

Authorities and organizers described the anniversary as an occasion to recall the 1941 uprising's role in the liberation of the Macedonian people and to reflect on the broader anti-fascist struggle that began in Prilep and Kumanovo.

Commemorative programmes typically combine official speeches, wreath-laying at memorial sites and cultural segments; this year's gatherings follow that pattern and centre on the slogan translated for public events as "Ideals that build the future."
