North Macedonia above EU average for working‑age population
59.5% of North Macedonia’s population is aged 20–64, slightly above the EU average of 58.3% according to NUTS3 regional data.

North Macedonia has a larger share of working‑age people than the European Union average: 59.5% of the country's population is aged 20 to 64, compared with 58.3% across the EU.
Regional gaps remain within the EU
At NUTS level 3, 39 regions in the EU record a working‑age share of at least 63.0%. Within North Macedonia, the Polog region has the highest proportion among the country’s eight planning regions at 61.6%, while the Skopje region stands at 58.3%.
Across the EU the highest concentrations of people aged 20 to 64 are found in 22 German regions at 63.0%, with several regions in Denmark and some of Spain’s island territories also among the top performers.
By contrast, 189 NUTS3 regions in the EU have fewer than 55.0% of their residents in the 20–64 age bracket. These low‑share areas are mainly rural and include the interior of Portugal, large parts of rural France, much of eastern Germany, and rural territories in Bulgaria, Greece and the Nordic countries.
The figures underline that, despite North Macedonia’s slightly higher national share, sizeable differences persist both between and within countries across Europe.
