Emanuel Makron summons emergency meeting at Élysée after mass protests

French president Emanuel Makron has convened an urgent meeting at the Élysée Palace with the prime minister and several cabinet ministers after large protests took place across France.

The gathering was called in response to the scale of the demonstrations and rising pressure on the government. The Ministry of the Interior reported that around 256.000 people took part in the protests nationwide, with 56.000 of them in Paris. Unions put the estimate at roughly 450.000 demonstrators across the country.

Who is expected to attend

Officials said that Prime Minister Sebastijan Lekorni, Interior Minister Loran Nunjez and the Minister of National Education Eduar Zhefri are expected to be present at the meeting in the Élysée.

The discussions come amid mounting political pressure on the French administration, at a sensitive moment seven months before the presidential elections.

Government spokespeople have not released additional details about the agenda or measures to be announced, but the decision to summon a high-level meeting underscores the seriousness with which the presidency is treating the protests.
