Manchester City target Enzo Fernández as primary replacement for Rodri

Manchester City have identified a preferred target to fill the defensive midfield void left by Rodri: Enzo Fernández. The club’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, is said to favour the Argentina international as the player capable of stepping into the role immediately.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reported that Maresca places Fernández at the top of his list. City view the matter as a priority after Rodri’s transfer to Barcelona created a clear gap in the middle of the park.

Why Fernández?

Fernández has proven himself on football’s biggest stages and brings experience from top European competitions. Maresca values his ability to organise play, distribute the ball and control tempo — attributes City believe are essential for the role Rodri occupied for years.

There is, however, no public confirmation that formal negotiations between the clubs have begun. Sources stress that interest can quickly evolve into concrete steps, but any move would have to account for Fernández’s importance to his current team.

Manchester City have shown in the past that they are prepared to spend heavily when they are convinced a player fits their long-term plans. Club executives must now assess feasibility and the conditions under which such a transfer could be completed.

If City satisfy Maresca’s wish, they could retain one of the leading defensive midfielders in world football despite Rodri’s departure to Barcelona.
