Marcos Llorente, 31, has announced his retirement from the Spain national team, bringing an end to his international career just a month and a half after winning the World Cup with Spain. The Atletico Madrid midfielder said the decision is final and will mean he no longer accepts call-ups to the national side.
Llorente said the choice was taken before the World Cup and was not influenced by the outcome of the tournament. He described it as a personal decision reached after long consideration.
Career outline
He made his debut for Spain in November 2020 and finished his international run with 27 appearances. During his time with the national team he featured at the 2021 European Championship and at two World Cups, including the most recent tournament where Spain lifted the title.
At club level Llorente plays for Atlético Madrid. His retirement from international duty reduces Spain’s midfield options as the national team moves forward after their World Cup success.
