Messi fined but avoids suspension after incident with Quinn Sullivan

Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi was fined after a confrontation in the club's 2-2 regular-season draw with Philadelphia Union, but will not miss the team's next fixture.

In the second half, Messi and Philadelphia midfielder Quinn Sullivan became involved in a heated exchange. The 37-year-old struck Sullivan on the nape with an open palm, after which the two players came face to face.

Disciplinary outcome

Although the incident drew attention during the match, the sanction imposed did not include a suspension, meaning Messi will be available for Inter Miami's upcoming game against Toronto.

The decision leaves Messi free to continue contributing on the field; this MLS season he has scored 13 goals and provided 8 assists across 17 appearances.

The club now prepares for the next league match with its captain in the squad, while the episode will remain part of the ongoing discussion about on-field conduct in MLS games.
