Meta unveiled an 'open' artificial intelligence model — anyone will be able to download and modify it

Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, announced a new artificial intelligence model that can be downloaded and run on an ordinary computer. The model, called Muse Glimmer, is designed to run locally and to allow users and developers to use it without a constant connection to the company's servers.

Muse Glimmer is a smaller, optimized model created to perform more complex tasks — among them programming and activities carried out by so-called AI agents. At the same time, the company announced that it will release the weights of the more potent Muse Spark 1.2, which it describes as one of its most advanced models and which includes a programming tool capable of independently planning, executing and verifying complex changes in large software projects.

In an extensive address titled "The future is for everyone", Mark Zuckerberg opposed the idea that the most powerful AI systems should remain under the control of a small number of large companies, governments or other institutions. He advocates a vision of "personal superintelligence" — powerful AI systems at hand for individuals and small businesses.

Zuckerberg also warned that the U.S. risks losing its lead on open AI models relative to China, citing growing Chinese players and models as examples, among which he named Dipsik, Alibaba and Z.AI as particularly competitive and widely used.

He defended the practice called "distillation", in which a smaller model is trained based on the outputs of a larger, stronger model, and noted that Muse Glimmer was created using that method based on the more powerful Muse Spark. Zuckerberg also called on U.S. authorities not to introduce restrictions that would slow the development of domestic open AI models.

The company said that Muse Glimmer will be available under open source and a license that allows downloading, customization and local use, as part of a broader strategy to open the weights and expand access to advanced models.
