Mickoski: Government holds a four-year mandate; opposition may submit initiative for early elections

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said the Government of North Macedonia holds a four-year mandate and that its priority is delivering on promises and improving living standards. He added this while answering questions about the prospect of early parliamentary elections.

Mickoski told journalists that the door is open for an institutional route: "The united opposition Levica-DUI-SDSM in parliament can gather, submit an initiative for early parliamentary elections and if they do, then we as the Government will give an appropriate response."

Positions and parliamentary timetable

The prime minister reiterated that regular elections are scheduled for April 2028, but said his party would accept a parliamentary initiative filed by the opposition. He framed the coalition's immediate task as producing concrete results for citizens.

Reactions from other parties were mixed. DUI welcomed Mickoski's readiness to go to early elections should the Assembly seek them, calling institutional solutions and citizens' will a responsibility to be respected.

SDSM responded sharply, saying it "will not give the prime minister an alibi for early elections; they will happen when the Government runs out of money," a party spokesperson stated.

The smaller coalition partner Vlen said it is prepared to contest early elections even if it believes they are unnecessary. "We are not for early elections, but if there are, Vlen will win," Kasami said.
