Mika Häkkinen warns McLaren: don't rock the boat over Max Verstappen

10 August 2026 — Mika Häkkinen, the two-time Formula 1 world champion and former McLaren driver, urged the team to avoid pursuing Max Verstappen at all costs and to refrain from unsettling the squad with needless speculation.

Speaking on the "Up To Speed" podcast alongside his former McLaren teammate David Coulthard, Häkkinen reflected on the current state of the championship and the balance inside the Woking outfit.

Häkkinen warns against destabilising a functioning team

"It's interesting, but I wouldn't focus only on Max because at the moment there are two good drivers in the team. We've seen how McLaren operates and what they expect from their drivers. The only way to have a successful team is to have great chemistry. With talk of changing a driver, and even speculation about Max Verstappen, you risk destroying everything. Why rock the boat?" Häkkinen asked.

Häkkinen also stressed McLaren's present strengths: "McLaren currently has a world champion. We used to be team-mates with the longest-serving partnership in the championship. That was an indication of good harmony because if you are happy in the team, why change?" the Finn said. The two former teammates raced together for six seasons, a partnership Häkkinen cited as an example of stable team chemistry.

Häkkinen's comments underline a broader debate in Formula 1 about whether high-profile signings or driver swaps are worth the potential cost to a team's internal balance. For McLaren, the warning is clear: upheaval in the driver line-up could create problems that outweigh any short-term gains.
