Ministry of Health says 55 people ill with West Nile fever, 53 confirmed and two suspected; 19 patients now at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases in Skopje.

Ministry of Health: 53 confirmed cases of West Nile fever, 19 in hospital

The Ministry of Health reported that a total of 55 people have fallen ill with West Nile fever, of whom 53 cases are laboratory-confirmed and two remain suspected.

According to the ministry, one of the infected individuals is not hospitalized; all others have required hospital care.

Hospital pressure and timing

Currently, 19 patients are admitted to the Clinic for Infectious Diseases in Skopje. The peak occupancy at the clinic occurred on August 12, when 24 patients were hospitalized. The highest volume of hospitalizations was recorded during the period from August 3 to August 24.

Men account for the large majority of severe cases: nearly four times more men have been hospitalized than women. All recorded deaths so far have been men.

The ministry's update did not provide additional clinical details or the locations of the suspected cases.
