AS Monaco produced a stunning upset at Parc des Princes on September 4, 2026, beating European champions Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 to hand PSG their first Ligue 1 defeat of the season. Monaco extended a flying start to the campaign with a third straight win, this time on the road in Paris.
Late counter and set-piece finish decided a tight derby
The match began with an early opening for PSG: in the 12th minute Deziré Dué drove down the right and forced a save from Monaco goalkeeper Hradecki. PSG dominated territory in the first half, but Monaco defended resolutely and only rarely threatened the hosts’ goal.
PSG struck first in the 31st minute when Marquinhos converted following a left‑wing cross from Kvaratskhelia that hit Marquinhos in the chest and ended up in the net. Kvaratskhelia and Ruiz both tested the visitors' resistance before the break, and Brunner had a chance for Monaco, but the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
Early in the second half PSG had several opportunities — Vitinha and Akliush among those who looked dangerous — until Monaco hit back. A move down Monaco's right saw Teze deliver a cross that Nazinho headed home to level the game at 1-1.
As the match wore on Monaco grew in confidence and caught PSG on the break. Golovin fed Idumba on a counter; Idumba shifted the ball to his left, curled a shot past Safonov and completed the 2-1 turnaround that sealed victory for Monaco at Parc des Princes.
Elsewhere on the day, Real Madrid were beaten by Betis, while Kylian Mbappé missed a late penalty in the 90+4th minute.
