MotoGP to introduce separate sprint qualifying from 2027
From 2027 the sprint and Grand Prix grids will be set by distinct qualifying sessions, timed with the arrival of 850cc bikes.

MotoGP will introduce a revised weekend layout from the 2027 season, with separate qualifying sessions to set the grids for the sprint race and for the main Grand Prix. The change separates the way starting positions are decided so the sprint and the Sunday race will each have their own qualifying procedure.
The new weekend timetable
Under the new plan, Friday will feature two free practice sessions followed by a 15-minute qualifying session specifically to determine the grid for Saturday's sprint race.
Saturday will begin with another 20-minute free practice session and then move on to the established Q1 and Q2 qualifying sessions that will set the starting order for the main Sunday race.
The effect is that the starting positions for the sprint and for the Grand Prix will be decided separately, rather than using a single qualifying result for both races.
The changes are scheduled to take effect in 2027, when MotoGP also introduces new motorcycles powered by 850cc engines. Organizers say the intent is to alter the weekend dynamic and increase the spectacle for fans.
The announcement has already drawn mixed reactions among supporters and within the paddock, with debate expected to continue as the technical and sporting regulations are finalised before implementation.
