Mourinho: Vinícius is unfairly targeted but must control himself
Mourinho defended Vinícius from what he called unfair criticism but urged the winger to restrain his reactions to provocation.
Real Madrid's new head coach Jose Mourinho said he believes Vinícius has been unfairly singled out by critics, but added that the Brazilian forward must show better control when provoked. (26.08.2026)
The comments followed a series of confrontations involving Vinícius with opposing fans and players during Real Madrid's La Liga second-round away match at Espanyol in Barcelona on Saturday.
Context and Mourinho's view
Mourinho stressed there are incidents both on and off the pitch and drew a distinction between racist or homophobic abuse and the regular insults shouted by spectators. He argued that, when the provocations are not discriminatory, Vinícius should respond with greater restraint.
"There are situations on and off the pitch. The reaction to the fans and the insults, if they are not racist or homophobic, but the usual insults from the fans, I think he can and must control himself better. I think he can improve his relationship with opposing supporters," the Real Madrid coach said.
Mourinho's remarks come shortly after his appointment as Real Madrid's manager and add to the discussion about how the club and its players manage heated encounters in Spain's top flight.
