Mourinho defends Vinícius Júnior after whistles at Santiago Bernabéu
After Real Madrid’s victory over Inter on September 9, 2026, Mourinho praised the forward’s work-rate and urged respect despite a dip in form.

José Mourinho publicly defended Vinícius Júnior after a section of the Santiago Bernabéu crowd whistled the Brazilian when he was substituted late in Real Madrid’s win over Inter on September 9, 2026.
Mourinho acknowledged that Vinícius is not at his best right now but stressed the player’s work-rate and commitment to recovering form. The coach moved immediately to comfort the forward when he left the pitch in the 87th minute and escorted him to the bench.
Support despite criticism
Vinícius failed to register a direct involvement in the goals against Inter and some fans reacted with whistles as he was taken off. Mourinho told supporters to recognise the attacker’s effort and the sacrifices he makes for the team.
“He is not in his best form and he knows it. But he is working hard to become the Vinícius who decides matches again. Even when he is not at his highest level, he is working more than ever,” Mourinho said.
“Who gives everything deserves respect. I value this Vinícius very much. The time will come when he will decide matches again and bring us victories,” Mourinho added, underlining his belief that the player will return to decisive form.
Mourinho’s words aimed to calm the atmosphere at the Bernabéu and to shield the squad’s morale after a victory that nonetheless included moments of tension between players and some supporters.
