Mourinho imposes strict discipline at Real Madrid: three new rules

August 8, 2026 — Jose Mourinho arrived at Real Madrid and immediately set out to reshape day-to-day routines at the club, introducing a set of strict measures aimed at improving player fitness, recovery and team cohesion.

His method, sources say, relies more on firmness and clear principles than on brute force; Mourinho has emphasised unity as central to the project. Club photographs showing the full squad and coaching staff eating together underline that shift — a practice Mourinho has used before during his time at Benfica.

Three new rules

First, dietary control has been tightened: the club’s nutritionist is no longer a mere adviser but now prescribes strict menus for breakfast and snacks. Individual choices about meals have been removed in favour of a single, performance-driven plan.

Second, punctuality rules have been hardened. Players must arrive one hour before training starts; lateness will carry penalties. Disciplinary action no longer takes the form of fines — instead, a player who breaks the rules will complete an individual gym session separate from the group. The rule applies equally to all players, regardless of status.

Third, treatments performed outside the club are prohibited: all recovery and medical work must be coordinated through the club’s medical staff. Mourinho has made clear that standards apply to every aspect of professional life, not only what happens on the pitch.

Club sources commented: "He wants to foster togetherness and unity and so far it looks promising." Another source added: "The atmosphere is very, very good." The measures are seen as particularly important after a tense finish to last season.
