Musiala to Miss Bayern’s Opener — Return Scheduled Against Schalke

Bayern Munich have decided that Jamal Musiala will not be included in the squad for the club’s Bundesliga opener against Stuttgart, with coaching and medical staff unwilling to take risks ahead of the season start.

Musiala has been training separately since last Thursday after suffering two collapses during preseason fixtures. He first fell ill at the stadium on 15 August during the Telekom Cup match with Leipzig (3:1) and then again three days later in the game against Heidenheim (4:2). Detailed examinations identified a neurological dysfunction — so-called "absence seizures" that cause brief interruptions of consciousness.

Medical response and timeline

Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed the club was aware of the condition and said it has been present for some time. “We have known about this since last season and it became part of our daily routine. Thanks to well-adjusted therapy, Jamal kept the seizures under control. However, he recently slightly reduced his medication dose, so now we have to increase it again,” Eberl explained.

After the two collapses the club’s medical team immediately adjusted Musiala’s treatment to stabilise him and prevent further episodes. The new medication dose typically takes between 10 and 14 days to reach full effect, so the staff are prioritising caution while the player recovers.

Doctors treating Musiala have been clear that he should continue his professional career: they say he is physically in excellent condition, and that the episodes are the limiting factor for his match fitness. Following a rest day on Wednesday, Musiala is expected to reintegrate gradually into team training.

For now his official return to competitive action is projected for Bayern’s second Bundesliga match, away at Schalke, as the club balances the urgency of his availability with the priority of long-term health and stability.
