Mustaches and men’s health: Why more men are choosing orthodontics, says Prof. Dr. Radmila Dimovska
Prof. Dr. Radmila Dimovska explains how bite problems affect digestion, oral hygiene and jaw pain, and which discreet treatments fit a busy life.

November has for years become synonymous with the global Movember movement — a month when mustaches take center stage to raise awareness about men’s health. What began as a lighthearted challenge to grow facial hair has evolved into a platform encouraging men to discuss prevention, habits and self-care more openly.
Still, while many focus on facial hair, one of the most important features of a man’s face — the smile — often remains overlooked. Proper bite alignment and well-positioned teeth are not merely cosmetic details: they affect chewing efficiency, digestion and even pain in the jaw joints.
Orthodontic problems such as crowded teeth, a protruding or recessed jaw, or large gaps are more than a visual concern. Misaligned teeth can create mechanical difficulties during chewing, forcing the digestive system to compensate. Over time, this may contribute to stomach issues and reduced nutrient absorption.
Uneven distribution of chewing forces also accelerates tooth wear and increases the risk of fractures. Chronic pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can follow; many men mistake these pains for migraine or sinus problems without realizing the mouth may be the source.
Modern options that suit busy lives
Hygiene is another critical point: compressed or twisted teeth are harder to brush and floss, permitting plaque and calculus to build up and opening the door to cavities, bad breath and periodontitis — a process that can eventually cause premature tooth loss. Straightening teeth simplifies oral care and is one of the best long-term protections against such complications.
Today’s dental technology offers solutions that fit active professional lifestyles. Nearly invisible clear aligners have become especially popular with businesspeople because they are discreet, removable for meals and allow normal communication at work. For those who prefer fixed appliances, aesthetic sapphire or ceramic braces provide a less conspicuous yet precise route to the desired result.
This November, while many men tend their mustaches in the spirit of Movember, it is worth looking beyond the surface. Booking an initial orthodontic consultation may seem like a small step, but it brings lasting benefits for health, function and confidence. A smile is not just decoration — it reflects your health and your commitment to taking care of yourself.
