The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) says 5,628 people have been detained since September 2024 as part of the nationwide operation named “Chistach”, aimed at detecting and suppressing violent crime, illegal drug trade and cross‑border criminal networks.

According to the ministry, police checks so far have identified 74,229 people and carried out 158,955 inspections of persons, vehicles and luggage. Officers also executed 1,158 searches of homes and other premises. From those actions the authorities filed 1,135 criminal charges: 88 for violent crime and 1,047 related to illegal drug trafficking.

Detention measures have been ordered against suspects, and in some cases convictions and prison sentences followed.

“During the operation, significant quantities of various types of narcotic drugs were seized, including marijuana, cocaine, amphetamine, heroin, hashish and MDMA tablets, as well as weapons, cash, several passenger vehicles and mobile phones. Several international channels for illegal drug trafficking were also prevented, especially at the border crossings 'Tabanovce', 'Deve Bair' and 'Star Dojran'.” said the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The ministry added that intensified controls will continue, with a continued focus on violent crime, illegal drug trafficking and cross‑border offences.
