MIA: 871 violations by electric-scooter riders in September 2026

The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) carried out intensified traffic checks across the country during September 2026 focused on riders of light electric vehicles (electric scooters), finding a total of 871 violations.

According to the MIA's Sector for Traffic Affairs, the single largest group of offenses — 377 cases — concerned riders not wearing protective helmets.

Regional breakdown and criminal cases

Most violations were recorded in the area of SVR Bitola — 290. The mobile road safety unit registered 167 violations, SVR Ohrid recorded 125, and SVR Strumica documented 113. The remaining violations were spread across other police sectors.

During the same enforcement operations authorities registered eight cases of the criminal offence "reckless driving of a motor vehicle", under Article 297-a of the Criminal Code.

In addition to the scooter riders, police registered 5,362 traffic violations committed by other road users. Appropriate legal measures were taken for all recorded offenses.

The MIA said it will continue intensified traffic controls and appealed to electric-scooter users to wear protective helmets, follow traffic rules and use the surfaces intended for their safe participation in traffic.
