Teenager in Malaysia on trial for the murder of 16-year-old schoolmate

In Malaysia a teenager is on trial accused of the murder of 16-year-old Yap Shing Xuen, a case that awakened public attention and raised questions about the influence of social networks on children.
According to the indictment, the girl was found dead in a school toilet in a suburb of Kuala Lumpur in October 2025; she had been stabbed multiple times. The suspect was 14 years old when the crime occurred and pleaded not guilty.
Legal consequences and public reaction
Because of his minority, under Malaysian law his name cannot be published. His age also means he is not subject to the death penalty; however, if convicted he could receive a prison sentence of, reportedly, 30 to 40 years and be punished with caning.
The police confirmed that a note was found on him at the time of arrest, and reports about the alleged content have fueled debate about whether and how much online environments can radicalize or influence vulnerable teenagers. Possible influences mentioned include exposure to the "manosphere" and the "incel" culture.
Some media and analysts compared the case to themes from the Netflix series Adolescence, which deals with isolation among teenagers, online radicalization and violence. The murder has sparked debate about school safety and control of harmful online content for children.
Last year, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was asked about this case and other incidents of violence in schools; he said that "almost all these problems stem from the use of mobile phones and social networks" and promised that he would consider stricter measures. Since then authorities have introduced new rules for child protection, and from June 2026 Malaysia banned all persons under 16 from having profiles on major social platforms.
