The Maritime Rescue Service launched a search operation last night after the boat was reported about 60 miles south of Gran Canaria. Rescuers reached survivors and pulled 44 people from the water.
Officials said five bodies remained on board the vessel and could not be recovered because of poor weather conditions. Authorities described the incident as a major maritime tragedy.
Among those who died was a baby, according to the information released by rescue authorities. No further details about nationalities or ages were provided.
