Film and series about Toše Proeski announced

A new regional film project about Toše Proeski's life and legacy was unveiled at the Weekend.19 festival in Rovinj, the creative team announced, planning three separate formats: a feature film, a scripted series and a documentary series.

The production team is led by producer Pece Taleski with creative direction from author Igor Stoimenov and screenwriters Milana Vlaović and Andrej Volkašin. According to the producers, the goal is to move beyond the public image and portray the person behind the fame.

Inspiration from Toše's last interview

The central inspiration for the project is a line from Toše’s final interview given just hours before the fatal crash: "I would like to meet that Toše."

Igor Stoimenov told the audience that the sentence reveals the emotional core the team wants to explore: "He was talking about the image of a perfect life that others had created for him, in which, it seems, he himself could no longer recognize himself. For me, that sentence contains the soul of this project. This is not only the story of the first post‑Yugoslav star who united people with his voice, but the story of the boy behind that image — the boy from Kruševo who wanted to love, to be loved and to have an ordinary life," he said.

The writers and researchers have spent months on location, conducting dozens of interviews with people who were close to Toše, visiting key places connected to his life and collecting lesser‑known details. "Before us are facts, testimonies and memories. But a film cannot contain an entire life. The greatest screenwriting challenge is to recognize what truly belongs to the story and where biography ends and cinema begins," screenwriter Andrej Volkašin explained.

Producer Pece Taleski added that the human story at the project's core is universal and that they hope the films and series will resonate even with audiences unfamiliar with Toše's music. Exact shooting dates and the name of the actor who will portray Toše have not been disclosed.

Toše Proeski died on 16 October 2007 at the age of 26; his wide vocal range and repertoire spanning pop, rock, opera and traditional folk continue to connect listeners across the region.
