At least 12 killed in massive Russian missile strikes on Kyiv; Ukraine faces shortage of air‑defence systems

At least 12 people were killed in a series of Russian missile strikes carried out overnight on Kyiv and its surrounding region, Ukrainian authorities said. The attacks damaged residential buildings across several districts and ignited fires in multiple locations.

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram that the strikes shattered the windows of a children's hospital and caused significant destruction to housing blocks. Local emergency services are continuing damage assessments across the city.

Rescue teams searching for survivors

Authorities are working to pull people from under the rubble of destroyed buildings, and rescue teams have already pulled two survivors from damaged sites. Emergency crews remain at several scenes conducting search-and-rescue operations.

Klitschko said that “several people remained trapped in a shelter during an air raid, while others were trapped in a residential building.” Officials have not yet released a full list of the wounded or identified all victims.

Ukrainian officials have also warned of a shortage of air-defence systems, a factor that, they say, complicates efforts to prevent or intercept large-scale missile barrages targeting populated areas.
