At least 23 dead as monsoon and typhoons trigger floods and landslides across the Philippines
NDRRMC reports floods and landslides in Luzon and parts of the Visayas after rains tied to the southwest monsoon and Typhoons Luis and Maymay.

At least 23 people have died and thousands were forced from their homes after heavy rains driven by an enhanced southwest monsoon and the tropical cyclones Luis and Maymay caused floods and landslides across the Philippines.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Monday that severe flooding and landslides struck several regions, with the hardest hit areas including Luzon and parts of the Visayas. Local authorities, together with national agencies and local governments, are conducting rescue, humanitarian and evacuation operations.
Rivers overflowed and many roads became impassable, prompting large-scale evacuations to temporary shelters. Infrastructure damage has been reported in multiple provinces: roads, bridges and agricultural land suffered destruction, complicating relief and recovery efforts.
There have also been power outages and disruptions to water supplies in flooded zones. The council warned of more intermittent rains in the coming days and urged residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas to stay alert and follow evacuation guidance.
In footage shared on social media, one post said, "Heavy flooding reaching waist-deep levels has stranded motorists and commuters along E. Rodriguez Sr. Avenue corner G. Araneta Avenue as of Monday at 2:30 PM. In a video uploaded by Allan Lumalang, residents are seen braving the… pic.twitter.com/1egqJ3M9li" — The Philippine Star (@PhilippineStar) August 17, 2026.
Government humanitarian operations are continuing as officials work to reopen access to affected communities and deliver aid to evacuated families.
