At least 24 people were killed in Russian strikes across central and eastern Ukraine overnight, President Volodymyr Zelensky said, calling the assault one of "the most heinous" attacks by Russia.

Zelensky said a residential building in Pryluky in Chernihiv region was destroyed and called that strike "a birthday present for Putin", who turns 74 today. Strikes were also reported in Kyiv, Dnipro, Kremenchuk, Zaporizhzhia and Oleksandriia.

Widespread overnight strikes

The attacks, which hit multiple cities and towns, struck civilian infrastructure and housing in central and eastern parts of the country. Ukrainian officials gave the preliminary death toll as at least 24 people, while rescue teams continued searching damaged sites.

Authorities in Pryluky said the destroyed residential block was among the worst-hit locations overnight. Zelensky’s characterization of the strikes underscored the scale and brutality of the operation, coming on the Russian president’s birthday.

The situation remains fluid and casualty figures could change as emergency teams complete their work and officials compile reports from the affected regions.
