At least two people were killed early this morning when Russia struck Kyiv with ballistic missiles and drones, Ukrainian authorities said; one of the fatalities occurred in a parking area outside a maternity hospital.
In recent months Moscow has stepped up air strikes on Ukraine, increasingly employing fast drones that are harder to intercept and taking advantage of a shortage of interceptors for ballistic missiles.
“While people were sleeping, flashes from the explosions lit up the sky. Again, the main targets of the attack were Kyiv and civilian infrastructure, residential buildings, a maternity hospital, energy infrastructure and logistics,” wrote President Volodymyr Zelensky on Telegram.
Scope and civilian impact
The assault struck civilian sites across the city and targeted critical infrastructure, according to Ukrainian statements, adding to a string of strikes that officials say have concentrated on populated areas and services.
Emergency services worked through the morning; authorities are still accounting for casualties and damage caused by the strikes.
The attack follows weeks of intensified aerial action by Russian forces, which Kyiv says has relied more heavily on salvoes of missiles and swarms of high‑speed drones.
