Istanbul records worst floods in 80 years; two people killed
Heavy rainfall, described as the highest since meteorological records began, caused power outages, traffic disruption and two fatalities.

Two people have died after severe flooding hit Istanbul, in what authorities described as the worst floods the city has seen in the last 80 years. Emergency services are working to manage the immediate consequences as streets and neighbourhoods are inundated.
Widespread disruption from record rainfall
Officials said the volume of rain that fell on Turkey’s largest city is the highest recorded since meteorological measurements began. The downpour left many roads impassable and triggered widespread power cuts.
Emergency teams have been deployed across the city to rescue stranded residents and clear waterlogged routes. Local authorities reported significant disruption to traffic and municipal services as crews respond to multiple incidents.
Schools in Istanbul will remain closed until Monday. Authorities urged residents to avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary and to follow safety instructions from emergency services.
Hospitals and local agencies continue to assess damage and assist affected communities while cleanup operations proceed. Officials have asked people to stay informed through official channels as recovery work continues.
