Police convoys attacked and tent torched in Belgrade after Vučić's election defeat

Multiple police convoys were attacked in central Belgrade after Aleksandar Vučić suffered defeat in the country's parliamentary elections, prompting tense scenes outside the presidential building as officers withdrew after securing state institutions.

As police units fell back, demonstrators confronted and struck several police vehicles. The convoys had been escorted by special police forces, but groups of citizens approaching the convoy shouted and voiced their discontent.

Encampment dismantled and one tent set alight

Supporters' tents and the fences in the central Belgrade park — where Vučić's backers had camped for more than a year — were quickly taken down by people in the crowd. One of the tents was later reported to have been set on fire.

Groups of citizens drove through the city in cars, honking, singing and chanting “Aleksandar is gone”, celebrating the electoral outcome. Some demonstrators described the events as an opportunity for a new beginning and greater freedom in the country.

The incidents underline the volatile atmosphere in the wake of the vote, when public celebrations and confrontations with security forces unfolded in the capital's central areas.
