Ombudsman urges bigger budget and stronger institutional support

The parliamentary debate on amendments to the Law on the Ombudsman began this week, and the ombudsman used the opening of the debate to call for a larger budget and stronger institutional backing.

Background of the legislative process

The ombudsman reminded lawmakers that the process of revising the law was launched last year with the formation of a working group. He stressed that the office faces concrete operational problems that must be addressed alongside any legal changes.

According to the ombudsman's statement, the institution is operating without funds to cover rental costs, is short-staffed and has responsibilities that "can and should be expanded" — a change that would require additional resources and personnel.

In his appeal, the ombudsman urged the Government and the Ministry of Finance to stop the ongoing reductions to the office's budget, warning that continued cuts will undermine the institution's ability to perform oversight and provide services to citizens.

Parliamentary debate now moves forward with legislators expected to consider both the proposed legal amendments and the practical needs the ombudsman's office has highlighted. The outcome will determine whether the institution receives more stable funding and a reinforced mandate.
