Marseille fans unfurl 'VIVA ROJA' banner in tribute to Spain at Stade Vélodrome

Fans at Olympique de Marseille surprised spectators during the club’s opening Ligue 1 match by unveiling a large choreography at the Stade Vélodrome that honoured Spain’s recent World Cup triumph.

The display included a prominent banner reading "VIVA ROJA" and a depiction of the World Cup trophy with the outline referencing the tournament held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Context and unexpected symbolism

The gesture drew attention because Spain and France have been locked in decisive encounters over the past three summers — at the European Championship, the Nations League and the World Cup — with Spain advancing to the finals in each case while France were eliminated. Given those high-profile clashes, many observers expected Spanish national team symbols to be unpopular among French supporters.

Club rivalries, however, appear to explain the scene better than sporting affection for Spain. For a segment of Marseille’s stands the choreography functioned as a provocation aimed at the concentration of footballing power in Paris and, by extension, at Paris Saint-Germain.

Other readings surfaced as well: some locals used the moment to express pride in Marseille’s Spanish-origin communities; others saw it as a contrast between Spain’s global success and growing financial and institutional strains around Olympique de Marseille. Video clips of the mosaic circulated on social networks in the days after the match.
