Ilija Nestorovski: If North Macedonia needs me, I'm here

Ilija Nestorovski, the experienced Macedonian international, is enjoying a revival at 36 — he has already scored seven times this season and sits third in the Croatian First Football League (HNL) scoring chart.

Form and a possible national-team return

Despite his age, Nestorovski has impressed with consistent performances and a professional approach that, according to him, looks more like a player at the start of his career than one winding down.

In an extensive interview he reflected on his career and on the one big regret: missing the European Championship because of injury. He said: "Really, I achieved everything. Only, maybe when it comes to Macedonia I regret that I couldn't play at that European Championship. But, it is what it is. That injury occurred and that's that. Otherwise, I achieved everything else. I played in the five strongest leagues and scored goals there – everything was really great. Except that European Championship, which I really regret, but that's in the past – we move on. Maybe now the World Cup is next, if I receive a call again for the national team – considering that I returned to good form, you never know" – said Nestorovski, adding.

He left the door open for a recall. "Well, I always have hope. I keep training, I keep playing and I have never given up on the national team. If a call arrives, I am always available for Macedonia; to play for Macedonia, for your own country, is a true pride. So, I am always at their disposal. I noticed that in recent years I did not receive calls, but that is not a problem at all. In fact, it gives me more time for the family during the international breaks. But, if after these excellent performances someone remembers me, then, fine, I'm here."

The forward remains one of North Macedonia's most prolific scorers historically, and his current scoring run in the HNL has prompted renewed attention over whether he could be considered for future national selections, including possible World Cup qualification matches.
