Foiled drone plan to smuggle gun into Nis prison
A man was arrested after police say he intended to use a drone to smuggle a pistol with ammunition into a prison in Nis.
Police in Nis have detained a man suspected of attempting a dramatic prison escape plot that involved using a drone to deliver a firearm into a correctional facility.
According to investigators, the suspect planned to fly a drone over the prison perimeter and drop a pistol with ammunition inside the compound so that an inmate could recover it.
The intended recipient was an inmate from Novi Pazar who is serving a sentence in the Nis prison; the plan called for that prisoner to seize and abduct a prison guard and then use the guard as a hostage to facilitate an escape.
Items seized at arrest
When authorities arrested the suspect, they found a drone, a pistol and eight bullets in his possession.
The police say they have detained the man and opened an inquiry; investigators are examining the evidence and will determine what charges will be brought as the case proceeds.
