Invisible workers at discount stores in North Macedonia — tired faces at the checkout
Behind low prices are employees who juggle many tasks, often standing for hours with little rest.

When we choose discount supermarkets to save a few denars, we rarely stop to consider the hidden cost of those lower prices: the people who keep the store running. At the front line, behind the registers, are cashiers whose smiles often mask deep fatigue.
These stores are designed to cut operating expenses, and that strategy frequently means one or two employees must cover many roles at once. While one hand scans items at high speed, their attention is already on restocking shelves, checking price tags, lifting heavy crates and managing a nonstop queue of customers.
The shortage of staff on a shift leaves them standing for hours without a meaningful break. The combination of repetitive physical work, the constant flow of shoppers and the pressure to move customers quickly produces visible exhaustion that no friendly smile can fully hide.
Small gestures, big difference
Shoppers often grow impatient with lines or delays, forgetting that the person behind the counter is working long, demanding hours for modest pay. The daily effort of these employees is an unspoken reminder that every cheap item comes with someone else’s labour and tiredness.
Next time you reach the checkout in a discount store, a little patience, a kind word or a genuine smile can matter. Beyond the bargains and bright shelves, there are people carrying much of the workload — and a small act of courtesy can make their shift a little less heavy.
