Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for cocaine, the player confirmed on September 4, 2026. Under the applicable anti-doping rules, the standard ban for this type of violation is three months.
Reduction linked to treatment programme
The 31-year-old agreed to take part in a treatment programme approved by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), and that commitment led to the reduction of the sanction to one month. Kyrgios told investigators the cocaine was used recreationally while out before his scheduled appearance in Mallorca.
An independent scientific expert reviewed the case and concluded that the amount detected in the sample was consistent with Kyrgios's account that the use occurred out of competition. The player also issued a public apology, saying he had made "a big mistake" and accepting full responsibility.
The suspension is due to expire today, September 4, 2026, provided Kyrgios completes the ITIA-approved programme. If he meets that condition, the Australian will be eligible to return to competition immediately after the ban ends.
Authorities confirmed the original sanction for this category of offence is three months, and that the mitigation followed Kyrgios's cooperation and participation in the treatment process. The case highlights how accepted mitigation measures can alter the length of a doping penalty when specific conditions are met.
