Nicki Minaj appears at Michigan Republican rally; Trump compliments her
The rapper joined a GOP rally ahead of the midterms and was publicly praised by Donald Trump.
Rapper Nicki Minaj made a surprise appearance at a Republican Party rally in Michigan to show support ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, and received a public compliment from former President Donald Trump.
Attendance, comments and immediate reaction
Minaj stood onstage during the event held in Michigan as Republicans seek turnout before the midterms. Trump addressed the crowd and singled out the rapper, offering a compliment about her appearance.
The episode followed a pattern in the campaign in which Trump has repeatedly made jokes about the physical appearance of Ohio senator John Hasted, but his remarks about Minaj drew attention for being directed at a guest rather than a rival politician.
The surprise visit by a high-profile entertainer to a partisan rally added an unusual flourish to the campaign stop and was noticed by those attending and by observers tracking the run-up to the elections.
Organizers framed Minaj’s presence as a show of support for Republican efforts in Michigan; the rally formed part of a wider set of events aimed at mobilizing voters ahead of the midterms.
