No clear winner has been declared after Sweden's parliamentary election as parties of the left‑center hold a slight lead with roughly 95% of votes counted.
The result, if sustained, would halt the country's four‑year turn to the right that reshaped Sweden from one of Europe’s most welcoming destinations for migrants into a state with one of the strictest asylum regimes.
Numbers and narrow margins
The Social Democrats of possible future prime minister Magdalena Andersson are estimated to finish with only three parliamentary seats more than a rival coalition of four parties led by incumbent conservative prime minister Ulf Kristersson.
Kristersson governs in partnership with the far‑right Sweden Democrats, a party with neo‑Nazi roots, which has been promised ministerial posts should the coalition remain in power.
With the count still incomplete, parties on both sides signalled caution: the margin is small enough that remaining ballots and final tallies could determine which bloc will be tasked with forming the next government.
