Nikola Jokic, long regarded among the NBA's top players and a global sporting figure thanks to his play for the Denver Nuggets, says the attention that follows him has grown intolerable.
Jokic seeks more privacy during summers in Sombor
The Serbian center has for years retreated to his hometown of Sombor in the off-season, where he prefers a low profile, attends horse races and avoids the spotlight of professional basketball life. Despite his stature in the sport, Jokic told reporters that constant recognition has worn on him.
Explaining his frustrations, Jokic said: "Popularity bothers me more and more. This will sound harsh, but I'm becoming harsher and harsher toward people who approach me. Honestly, it's exhausting. Some people around me know that, I don't take pictures because it's my time. I'll sound harsh again, but what can I do? It's been 11 or 12 years and enough."
He added that intrusive phone photography in public places is a particular sore point.
"I just feel sad. Whenever you go to a bar, restaurant or a game, people just take out their phones and try to photograph you. That's really rude. It's not like I'm trying to show off. I'm just who I am and I live my life," Jokic said, stressing his desire for ordinary moments without being filmed or photographed.
