Low Danube in Budapest reveals WWII motorcycle and remains of two Nazi soldiers

Low water in the Danube in Budapest exposed a motorcycle from the Second World War and well‑preserved human remains belonging to two Nazi soldiers, the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund) reported.

Officials say the finds were uncovered in the riverbed close to Batthyány Square, where the exposed mud revealed not only the motorcycle and the bodies but also anti‑tank mines and a jerry can for fuel.

Preservation and recovery

Observers and specialists noted that the river mud at the Batthyány site is mixed with petrol oil, which created unusually favourable conditions for preserving organic material and metal objects. According to Volksbund, the presence of this petroleum product helped preserve identification discs: "the letters and numbers on them are still clearly legible."

The German War Graves Commission has dispatched a specialist to carry out an exhumation in cooperation with Hungarian colleagues. Recovery teams will follow forensic and safety procedures because of the discovered ordnance.

Authorities have not released identities pending examination of the identification discs and further forensic work. Officials say the next steps will include careful documentation of the finds and coordination between Volksbund and Hungarian authorities to ensure respectful handling and eventual burial according to international standards.
