Netflix will release a new feature-length documentary about Michael Schumacher that revisits the turbulent 1994 Formula 1 season, the year he won his first world championship. The film, titled "Schumacher '94 – The Birth of a Legend," is set for a worldwide premiere on October 2, 2026, and focuses solely on the events that triggered the so-called "Schumi mania."
Coming five years after the 2021 film that covered Schumacher's whole career up to his skiing accident, the new production narrows its lens to the single season when the 25-year-old driver claimed his first title with Benetton. The documentary promises previously unseen footage from the tracks and a reconstruction of a season marked by both sporting triumph and deep crisis.
From Brazil to Imola: a season of highs and devastating lows
The 1994 campaign began with a victory in Brazil but soon became one of Formula 1's darkest years. The Imola weekend ended in catastrophe: the deaths of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger changed the sport forever. Alongside that tragedy, the season was shadowed by allegations against Benetton of mechanical and technical manipulation, which led to penalties, disqualifications and suspensions during the year.
The championship was ultimately decided at the final race in Australia, where Schumacher collided with his main rival Damon Hill and secured the title by a single point. The documentary will revisit those decisive moments with archival material and interviews.
Director Christin Freitag assembled testimony from people who were central to the story. "Corinna Schumacher" appears on camera and provides rare details about the start of their relationship and private life together. Other contributors include Bernie Ecclestone, Flavio Briatore, Willi Weber, David Coulthard, Kai Ebel and Heiko Waßer.
