New wildfire near Zadar — homes not presently endangered
Aerial and ground firefighting teams contained the blaze near Jovići; responders say homes were defended.
A wildfire broke out today near Zadar on the Croatian coast, close to the settlement of Jovići; houses are currently not at risk, said Slavko Tucaković, commander of the Croatian firefighting service.
Firefighting aircraft and ground crews respond
Tucaković told reporters that, alongside multiple firefighting crews on the ground, aerial resources were deployed to battle the blaze: a helicopter and an air tractor (air tanker) joined operations.
He added that the fire at one point threatened several homes, but those properties were defended by responders and the immediate danger has passed.
As the situation eased during the afternoon, a second Air Tractor arrived instead of a Canadair. Later in the day the aircraft were pulled back and firefighting efforts continued with ground teams on the scene.
Volunteers have also been assisting with animals in nearby Omiš. “Unfortunately, many were burned,” volunteers said.
Authorities remain at the site to monitor for flare-ups and to secure the perimeter while cleanup and damage assessments continue.
