Real Madrid face another defensive headache after 23-year-old Raul Asensio moved closer to an operation that could sideline him for several months. The player has suffered problems with his right tibia for nine months and conservative treatment has so far failed to resolve the issue.
Timeline and consequences
The possibility of surgery was already considered at the end of last season, but at that time the club and the player opted to continue with non-surgical care. Pain returned in August, and the latest rehabilitation period has not produced the hoped-for improvement.
A formal decision on whether Asensio will undergo surgery is expected soon. If the operation goes ahead, he would be absent from the pitch for around two to three months.
Asensio has not yet made an appearance for Real Madrid this season, and his potential operation would further reduce rotation options in the Spanish giant's defensive line.
The development adds to the injury concerns within the squad and could force the coaching staff to adjust selection and tactical plans in the coming weeks.
