Shooting in Nonthaburi: former MP accused of killing provincial official and his driver
A former MP was arrested after a shooting at the Nonthaburi provincial administration building that left a senior official and his driver shot; two people were hospitalized.
An armed former lawmaker opened fire inside a provincial government office in Nonthaburi, on the outskirts of Bangkok, on Monday morning, killing a senior provincial official and his driver and prompting the arrest of the suspect, officials said.
Attack unfolded at Nonthaburi PAO headquarters around 11:29 a.m.
The shooting took place at about 11:29 a.m. local time at the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organisation headquarters in Muang district. Police said the attacker is a former member of parliament identified as Chalong Riewrang, and the senior official who was shot is Pol Col Thongchai Yenprasert.
Major General Dejrape Kongde, commander of the provincial police, said the assailant was detained at the scene and that two people were wounded and taken to hospital. "Two people were wounded and taken to hospital," he said.
The incident came just days after a separate school shooting in the same province that left nine people dead and more than 20 wounded. In that case a 14-year-old student shot his grandparents at home and later opened fire at Debsirin Nonthaburi school before taking his own life, in the deadliest mass shooting in Thailand in four years.
Students in Nonthaburi returned to classrooms on Monday; some schools implemented metal detectors and additional security checks. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reiterated his intention to tighten gun controls after the deadly school attack.
Authorities said their investigation into Monday's office shooting was ongoing and provided few immediate details about motive. The arrest of the former MP was announced swiftly at the scene.
