Attempted attack at Rohde & Schwarz construction site in Munich; two Bulgarians arrested

On the night of September 2–3, 2026, several incendiary devices were thrown at a construction site in Munich outside the premises of the defence-related technology group Rohde & Schwarz, German authorities said. The Bavarian State Criminal Police Office (LKA) suspects the incident was an attempted attack and has opened an investigation that includes the possibility of a political motive.

Police said the devices were reportedly tossed from a vehicle toward the site at around midnight. At least one device ignited a fire that officers extinguished, while another had to be rendered safe by special units. Authorities reported no significant material damage.

A witness alerted police, and officers later arrested two people at a petrol station, the Munich police reported. The suspects are a 28-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man; Bavarian broadcasters say both hold Bulgarian citizenship. Police are examining whether the two are connected to the attack.

Company confirms emergency response but downplays damage

A Rohde & Schwarz spokeswoman confirmed the presence of police and firefighters at the company's construction site but said, "Our business complex is not directly affected." The company declined to comment further publicly at this stage.

The LKA has taken over the investigation because of the possible political dimension, a police spokesperson said. Officials are continuing forensic work at the scene and questioning suspects and witnesses as part of the inquiry.

Authorities recalled a 2021 sabotage near Rohde & Schwarz facilities when an exposed power line was set on fire, triggering an outage that affected about 20,000 households in eastern Munich. That earlier case, described at the time by its perpetrators as an attack on a "military group," remains unsolved.
